Saturday to Saturday, 6 full days skiing
Introduction
The Ötztal Valley is in the Austrian Tyrol. It is easily reached from Innsbruck/Igls in less than 2 hours. There is a superb network of huts and suitable 3,000m peaks to ski. The tour is perfect for those with previous ski touring experience, who would like an enjoyable week of touring in a fabulous part of Austria. We head straight into the mountains from the village of Vent, giving you a six day hut-to-hut tour.Course start point: Igls/Innsbruck, Austria
Outline Programme
| Day 1: | Arrive at the hotel in Igls (just south of Innsbruck and easily reached by bus or taxi from the airport or train station). We have a team briefing at 7 pm, followed by dinner. |
| Day 2: | Leaving the hotel after a very good breakfast, we go by road to the small mountain village of Vent (1,896m). From the village, we ascend on skis through the long, deep valley of the Nierdertal to the Martin Busch Hut (2,501m). In the afternoon, we practise avalanche rescue, beacon searches and, hopefully, enjoy some freshly-baked Strudel. |
| Day 3: | We leave the hut in the early morning and traverse onto the Marzelferner Glacier. This ascends gently to final, steeper slopes before a rocky ridge takes us to the top of the Hintere Schwartze (3,624m). We ski down north facing slopes and return to the Martin Busch Hut for the evening. |
| Day 4: | This morning, we skin directly up the valley, trending leftwards to ascend the even-angled glaciated slopes of the Similaun (3,806m). We leave our skis just below the summit ridge, where we change to crampons for the final section of the climb. We ski back to the Martin Busch Hut. |
| Day 5: | This morning, we say goodbye to the Martin Bush Hut and ascend on skis to the Hauslabjoch 3279m. We stop at the famous Tisenjoch along the way. This is where the remains of Otzi the Ice Man (3,200 BCE) were discovered. From the Hauslabjoch, we descend NW facing slopes before putting skins back on and ascending the last hour to the Bella Vista Hut. The hut is Italian, so we can expect a warm welcome and good coffee. For those of a mind, it has an outdoor hot tub and sauna in which we can ease our aches from the long mountain days that have carried us to this point. |
| Day 6: | Today, we climb the Weisskugel (3,738m). We leave the hut and skin upwards to a ridge-line. Dropping over this, we are then onto the Hintereis Glacier which we follow upwards to the Hintereisjoch (3460m). Here, we turn right to ascend the final south-facing slopes which bring us to a ski depot below the summit. The final section to the top follows an exposed ridge. Therefore, many parties are content to stop at the ski depot which has magnificent views before skiing down. Confident parties can go to the summit. Returning from the summit to the ski depot, we re-trace our steps back to the glacier and make a long ski descent to the Hochjoch Hospiz (2,413m). |
| Day 7: | Starting out directly behind the hut, we ascend and traverse steep ground to approach the glacial slopes leading to the Fluchtkogel (3,497m). Our descent, after the summit, may be made back via our tracks to the Hospiz, or by traversing over the Guslarjoch and skiing down via the Vernagthut. Both descents lead us to a narrow river gorge with a few sections on rocky tracks where we carry our skis. The gorge leads us back to our starting point in Vent and onwards by road to Innsbruck and our hotel in Igls. |
| Day 8: | Dispersal. Breakfast will be provided on the last morning before skiers leave the course. Overnight hotel. |
