Introductory Long Weekend

Written by Team Member Mike Woodcock, February 2006

I arrived on the Friday evening and was extremely disappointed at the lack of snow seen on the drive up. However, at the briefing, our instructor assured us that we would find snow, but that we may have to walk a bit for it.

Saturday was a long day from the Glencoe Ski Lift Car Park, and true to his word, Andy found us sufficient snow to practice ice axe arrest briefly, before moving onto travelling across snow, with and without the use of crampons. The latter part of the day was spent utilising the springlike conditions to pick off two Munros!

Sunday was noticeably cooler and we headed off to the Glencoe Valley for a roped scramble followed by the highlight of the weekend, an ascent of Broad Gully, before topping out on Stob Coire nan Lochan. Given the lack of snow elsewhere, this was a truly unexpected bonus to find snow in most of the gully and enabling us to feel we had done some real climbing.

On Monday there were extremely high winds and this ruled out the planned route for the day of No 4 Gully on Ben Nevis. Instead we headed off to Aonoch Mor for another full day of walking and practising some more ropework during the descent.

All in all, it was an excellent weekend. Andy Chapman, our instructor, was fantastic and we all got a lot out of the course. Criticisms = None, despite the lack of snow. Thanks very much Andy and the team at Jagged Globe.« Previous report | »
