Mera Peak - 11 Apr to 4 May '14
Written by Leader Mungo Ross, May 2014
Whatís left to say about the Mera Peak expedition? Olan has pretty much said it all for both of these spring trips to Nepal ñ thank you Olan for the write-up. Just like he says, some of us met at Heathrow, met the others in Kathmandu, flew to Lukla where we drank coffee ëtill all the bags arrived, trekked to the mountain, lost our American contingent who went for the helicopter option home while nine of us climbed to the top before trekking back to Lukla and a flight to Kathmandu - job done. O.K. we had our share of niggly (and some not so niggly) medical and acclimatisation issues but nothing that good old Cipro and Diamox couldnít cope with ñ ably assisted by our professional medics who were only pretending to be on holiday. And of course there were all the demands of a mountaineering expedition to altitude ñ the need to be flexible, adaptive, cooperative, supportive, coordinated, competent, patient, good-humoured, tolerant, fit, strong, healthy, focused, stubborn, bloody-minded (the list goes onÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖ!).
So all thatís left to ask the team is ìare you still dancing?î As the memories of Mera fade, what will remain will be the lessons learned, the experience gained, the laughs we shared; Jo has learned what to do with the clippy things, thereís a general appreciation of the benefit of having a very nice man at the top and at the bottom of ropes left tied to the mountain, most of the group have achieved PBs and exceeded their expectations and all of us have gone home richer and wiser ñ and I definitely need to get hold of a new joke book. I hope that you are all still dancing, planning your next adventures, inspired by our time together in Nepal to go further, higher, deeper, see whatís round the next corner. Thank you to Ang Dawa and a superb team of Sherpas, kitchen crew and porters, thank you once again to Shiv Raj and Jagged Globe for the planning, organisation and support, and thank you team for another brilliant wee walk in the Himalaya.
