A 100Km ski journey across Norway’s Hardangervidda from Haugastøl to Rjukan
Introduction
Join us 'on tour' in the Norwegian mountains as we cross from the northern edge of the Hardangervidda to the southern edge - 8 days on skis covering approx 100 km from Haugastøl to Rjukan. This is a committing trip, travelling over the high Arctic plateau, famous for its links with the Heroes of Telemark, and used as a training ground by Amundsen before his expedition to the South Pole. This linear journey involves many days of back-to-back ski travel with a pulk, and requires that you carry everything with you - if you are unsure about your ski ability of fitness level, we would recommend that you complete the Polar Expedition Training - Refresher course first of all.
Start point: Oslo, Norway
Grade: 3C
Experience Required
The trip requires previous experience of cross country skiing with a pulk and winter camping. This linear journey involves many days of back-to-back ski travel with a pulk, and requires that you carry everything with you - if you are unsure about your ski ability of fitness level, we would recommend that you complete the Polar Expedition Training - Refresher course first of all.You need to have a reasonable fitness level (for example, a regular hillwalker able to carry a day rucksack for approx 6+ hours on several consecutive days). Endurance exercise is better preparation for this trip than one hour sessions in the gym.
What to expect
The temperature at this time of year is usually around -5C to -20C. We will be in a part of the world where it is essential to have the correct equipment. Outline Itinerary
| Day 1: | Travel to course base in Norway Fly to Norway. Arrival in Norway at Oslo Gardermoen airport. Arrival in Norway at Oslo Gardermoen airport. Transfer by train into the mountains (approx 4 hours). We will be staying the first night in the log cabin at Geilo, where we all help with the food preparation and clearing away. Evening: dinner and itinerary briefing. |
| Day 2: | We pack our pulks and then we're on our way - taking everything with us, as this is a linear journey. Bespoke bus to take us the 35 minute journey from Geilo to our start point above Haugastøl. At this stage, the pulks are at their heaviest, so we will gradually build up the length of the day's travel. |
| Day 3 - 8: | After melting the snow to make water for our breakfast, our journey continues - the exact route will depend on the weather and snow conditions and the team. We plan to travel from Haugastøl in the north to Rjukan in the south via Rauhellern, Mårbu, Kalhovd and Helberghytta - this means we need to cover on average 14 - 15km per day through mountainous terrain. Every evening, we set up the tents, making the camp storm-proof if strong winds are forecast, and then melt more snow for our evening meals. |
| Day 9: | On the final morning, we have breakfast before taking down the camp a final time and then ski out to the road near Rjukan Fjellstue, where we meet the bespoke bus which takes us back to Kongsberg. Onward travel by train to the airport, arriving in the evening. Overnight hotel. |
| Day 10: | Fly home. |
