Ojos del Salado - December 2022

Written by Leader Rob Wymer (Rob Wymer), February 2023

Sometimes it’s all about the journey and the people you meet along the way, right?  The strong winds that seem to have affected the whole of South America over this period may have prevented us from even being able to attempt Ojos this time but that just isn't the whole story.  We travelled through and camped in the high Atacama desert - a landscape that is so spectacular, so different and so amazing.  We climbed high on 3 panoramic mountains of 4000, 5000, and 6000m elevation under gorgeous azure skies, and camped on beaches beside beautiful cerulean salt lakes.  We saw flamingos, vicunas and foxes but no other people.  We celebrated Christmas with a chilly dip in a lake followed by wallowing in a hot thermal spring, and then crowned that with a spectacular and enormous BBQ with local red wine.  We also got along famously as a group and had a lot of laughs, a heck of a lot.  My thanks to Iain, Joanne, Andy, Martin, Lane, Nicola, Rochelle and Rhiannon for making the expedition as good as it was - such fabulous company, every one of them.  So yes, the wind and other factors may have denied us our main objective but no, that didn’t stop us having a great adventure and making some brilliant and lasting memories along the way.
