Autumn Nepal 2000
Written by Leader Alun Richardson, Alan Hunt, December 2000
Overall, the weather was perfect in Nepal through the end of September and October which undoubtedly contributed to the high level of success on many of our popular objectives. Over 40 people summited on Mera Peak alone! Snow conditions on Mera Peak and Island Peak in particular were favourable, with hard, crunchy nev£ making the going a lot easier than it could have been! Those who crossed the Amphu Labtsa found very little snow on the far side, although the actual steepness and exposed nature of this technical obstacle suprised many. Congratulations to the Langtang Climber team, 8 of which summited on Naya Kanga (5,844m). Our Spring team had been unlucky with deep snow on the peak and although our Autumn team were delayed by a day in Bahrain, they skipped Yala Peak, went straight on to the mountain and got the result. Jagged Globe teams were involved in 2 evacuations this Autumn. One was of one of our own porters from the Mera La and the other was from Island Peak high camp of a French climber, suffering from Pulmonary edema. I was involved in the second incident and would like to highlight our team's outstanding efforts in getting him down to base camp and into a Gamov bag (High Altitude Portable Chamber) - they undoubtedly saved his life.
