Mera Peak - 15 Apr to 8 May '05
Written by Leader, May 2005
On 30 April after bed tea at 2am, the team left high camp at 3am, the early start being an attempt to beat persistant bad weather. Due to cold Elsa had to return to camp after reaching 6,000m. Marie, Barry and Richard, along with Sirdar Lhapka reached 6,300m, before exhaustion forced them down as well. Only Martin reached the Central Summit (6,461m) at around 08:30 along with all the Mera and Island team, led by Ed Chard. Unfortunately the summiteers were not rewarded with any views due to thick cloud cover that built during the ascent.
The expedition had enjoyed good weather for the first week, but then experienced snow showers for the next 12 days. However, everyone enjoyed the fantastic views on the ascent to high camp before it clouded over.
Despite the poor weather and reduced summit success, this was an extremely enjoyable expedition, made possible by excellent local staff
