Winter Toubkal Climb - February 2025

Written by Leader Christopher Brian Pearson (Chris), February 2025

All eight team members and our local Berber guides Omar and Hassan summitted Mount Toubkal on a perfect day of blue skies, sunshine, and crisp crunchy snow underfoot, perfect for walking in crampons right from the hut door. All the team felt well acclimatised from our acclimatisation days and just under 5 hours saw us on the summit. The first hour being in the calm dark of pre- dawn providing us with magnificent mountain light as the sun rose.

A keen wind as expected produced a testing temperature of minus 17 degrees on the summit with the wind chill. We were all glad of the JG kit list advice which served us well, including over-mitts and goggles - enabling us to spend 20 minutes enjoying the solitude of the summit with great views of the surrounding snowy shapely Atlas Mountains, whilst refuelling on local juicy orange segments and dates. Just two hours back down to the Toubkal refuge for a sumptuous tagine lunch produce by Briam -our local Berber cook, and relaxing on the sun warmed terrace.
