Aconcagua - 2 to 25 February 2003

Written by Leader Andy Teasdale, February 2003

The Aconcagua I 2003 Expedition has recently returned from a very enjoyable expedition. For the majority of the trip the weather was exellent, folk faired well with the altitude and the local hills and people were a pleasure to be amonst.

A team of 9 started the trip. This dropped to 6 after the load carry days to Camps 1 + 2, due to various reasons, none of which were altitude related. This then dropped to 3 due to a variety of altitude complaints after moving to Camp 2 for the summit attempt. Three nights were spent at Nido waiting for better conditions. Strong winds hounded the team at Camp 2 and the remaining 3 who made it to Camp 3 suffered even wilder weather on summit day.

Manish "Spud" Prasad, Phil Langley and Bill Consitt put in a fine effort to reach the top, but once they reached the exposed and windy traverse across to the Canaleta they were ground to a standstill by 100mph + winds.

The team returned to base camp late that evening in varying states of exhaustion, glad to have had a good attempt that day, but fully aware that the mountain was not taking visitors! Time had run out, Aconcagua was still swathed in foul winds, so we retreated to Mendoza for a rest and some culture. A fantastic trip! « | »
