Mera Peak - 22 Oct to 14 Nov '04
Written by Leader, November 2004
Unusually poor weather and snow almost barred the way into the Hinku valley during the early part of the walk in. High pressure eventually stabilised the situation and reasonable weather prevailed for the remainder of the expedition. Despite persistent illnesses amongst the team, 8 of the 11 members reached Mera Peak high camp at 5,800m.
On the 7th Nov at 0330, five of the team set off for the summit. One member turned back at first light, due to the cold. The crevasse near the top presented no real difficulties and was easily bypassed to the left using a fixed rope. Terry Bowen, Richard Summersell, Grant Woodward and Jamie Cuffley reached the summit (6,461m) with leader Mark Skelton and two of our Sherpas. The first team arrived at about 0800 and the second, at 1100. Clear conditions presented a magnificent panorama of the high Himalaya, including Everest to the north. Unfortunately, a very cold wind soon forced the team to descend.
