Dhaulagiri Circuit - 13 Oct to 3 Nov '12
Written by Leader John Armstrong, November 2012
It was a happy team that returned from the Dhaulagiri Circuit trek and Damphus Peak (6,060m) in Kathmandu on Thurs 1st November.
We enjoyed near perfect weather for this exceptional trek, which provided spectacular views from day one. The route was devoid of trekking Lodges and we met only a few other small groups of trekkers, so it really felt like a true adventure.
Typical comments included ‘probably the best trek I have been on’ and ‘what a superb journey beneath spectacular giants’. It is probably fair to say that the group agreed that it was indeed a tough trek, acknowledged by its T3 grading, one aspect being that some of the nights spent camping were quite chilly at minus 17! This was more than compensated for by clear skies giving excellent views of the 8,000m Dhaulagiri summits and surrounding peaks.
Damphus Peak had less snow than we might have expected but Duncan, Hilary and Phil all summited in good style returning to camp with broad smiles.
With a day still in hand we enjoyed two nights in the welcome warmth of Marpha at a mere 2,670m, this indeed proved to be the premier apple growing area in Nepal, the fresh fruit and apple brandy was appreciated by all.
The short flight from Jomson to Pokhara and onwards to Kathmandu continued to reward us with even more great views as we returned to the comfort of the Summit Hotel.
Finally, as the leader, I must compliment the group on being so well-prepared and for their flexible, positive approach which made my job very easy. Special thanks must go to our very experienced Sirdar, Pem Churiri, veteran of many Jagged Globe 8,000m expeditions and Ram, our cook and all the rest of the support crew who did so much to ensure our enjoyment.
