Trip Reports

Mera Peak 5 May - 28 May 2001

Written by Leader Tim Bird, May 2001

A successful and enjoyable expedition allowing three team members to summit on Mera Peak, the dry winter had left many crevasses covered by only thin snow bridges. The summit party had to break trial in late season fresh snow. Eleven of the twelve-team members reached high camp, the other member chose the Mera La as her high point. Six of the team left high camp for the summit, three turned round during the ascent.

During the trek in, due to fresh spring snow at Panch Pokari and above, we used a new route on the west side of the Hinku valley. This forest route which has just been finished goes from the Pankongma La to Kote at around 3500m. In Tangnag, during our trek in, we assisted a French team who had been on Mera with a medical incident involving two climbers with Hape. These climbers were evacuated by helicopter the next morning.« | »
