Mera Peak - 17 Oct to 9 Nov '08
Written by Leader Mungo Ross, November 2008
"As per the Itinerary" just about sums up this, the last of this year's Jagged Globe Mera expeditions. The group of 12 members have enjoyed good health, each other's company, near perfect weather and conditions, and the support of a particularly fine team of porters, cooks and Sherpas from Summit Trekking. Getting to the top of Mera Peak has almost been a bonus for the 9 who made it (3 of the group turned back on summit day after giving it all they could).
Each day the log is basically "as per itinerary" - travel; accommodation; the wonderful walk round the Hinku Valley; blue skies; fantastic views; a straightforward, unroped ascent on a firm trail (even if the climb felt like it was the hardest thing any of the group has ever done!); the walk back to Lukla; even having to wait in Lukla for two days of fog to allow us to get back to Kathmandu put us back on scedule; an expedition that quite simply had no problems!
For all the group, this trip once again has provided an experience that is much more than climbing a high mountain in the Himalayas - to share three weeks together, to experience the culture and people of Nepal, to enjoy the extended trek through such varied landscape and vegetation zones, and to gain personal experience of high altitude mountaineering. It is all of these things that this group is going home with, standing on the summit a satisfying memory, three weeks in Nepal so much more to remember. And while the trek and climb stretched everyone beyond what they had ever done before, they all acknowledged that their enjoyment and sucess rested qite literaly on the shoulders (well, heads actually) of the porters, and the efforts of our cookm team and sherpas.
Thank you all for a thoroughly enjoyable expedition.
Mungo Ross. Expedition leader for Jagged Globe.
