Mera Peak - 10 Oct to 2 Nov '08

Written by Leader, November 2008

One of the best groups I have had the privilege to lead. Everyone got on so well it was a pleasure to be there and the bonus of course was that we enjoyed perfect conditions which allowed eight of the nine who set out from High Camp to reach the summit of Nepal's highest trekking peak.

Despite losing a day at the start of the trip with a delayed flight to Lukla, the approach trek was completed as planned. Several of the team suffered colds and sore throats on the way but recovered well by the time we reached Khare (5,000m). The tried and tested approach had allowed our acclimatisation to work well. As we climbed higher to base camp, some found it a bit tougher, but next day we all moved up to the lofty perch of High Camp (5,800m).

At 0300hrs Sun 25 October saw a very well-organised team depart from the relative warmth of their tents wearing every piece of clothing they possessed, including down jackets. We made steady progress in about -25 deg celcius. At about 6,200m sadly Martyn decided this was to be his high point. The remainder of the team continued, arriving at the summit at around 0730hrs to be met with fantastic views of Everest and beyond.

It was a happy team that made their way back to Lukla, constantly reminded about exactly how much time Kate and Harriet were going to spend pampering themselves in Kathmandu. The remainder of us were content enough to look forward to relaxing with a drink on the verandas of the Summit Hotel, which is exactly how it turned out.

Thanks to you all for being such a great team.
