More Acclimatisation = More Success. Follow the optimum ascent profile on Kilimanjaro and increase your chances of reaching the summit

Introduction

Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, is the least difficult of the Seven Summits and is a superb challenge for fit walkers. Our trek via the Lemosho Glades route is designed to optimise acclimatisation, prior to summit day. All of our treks are led by experienced Jagged Globe mountain leaders, who use their considerable experience to great effect. We achieve 100% success in getting all team members to the summit on the majority of our trips.

This trip also takes in the major wildlife parks of the area, Ngorongoro and Tarangire, after your ascent of Kilimanjaro. You stay in comfortable wildlife lodges and can expect to view lion, giraffe, zebra, elephant, hippopotamus, rhino, wildebeest, cheetah, antelope, ostrich and a variety of other primates and bird life. Here is a summary of reasons why you should consider Jagged Globe for your Kilimanjaro climb:

10 reasons to climb Kilimanjaro with Jagged Globe:

  • Success – Climb with the high-altitude experts. We lead teams to the summit of Everest every year, as well as Kilimanjaro and many other mountains across the globe. We are experts in high-altitude trekking and mountaineering. Our overall success rate on Kilimanjaro is 96% (it’s 100% on most trips).
  • Leadership. You will be in a team led by a professional leader. You will have the support of our excellent English-speaking local guides.
  • Price. Your prices are guaranteed and all-inclusive. You won’t be left guessing what add-on fees for flights or park entry might be.
  • Acclimatisation. We take this very seriously, which is why you will spend 8 days on the mountain. Any less would increase your risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), whilst decreasing your chance of reaching the top.
  • Endorsement. The UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) adopted our itinerary as being the best, i.e. that most likely to reduce the incidence and severity of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) whilst allowing a realistic time-frame in which to climb the mountain.
  • Tents and Medical back-up. You’ll sleep in leading-brand (Terra Nova or Mountain Hardwear) tents and have supplementary oxygen and a portable hyperbaric chamber on hand, along with other drugs considered essential by the Wilderness Medical Society for treating mountain illnesses.
  • Porters. Each of your porters will be given a new fleece and new waterproofs, which they keep, plus a sleeping bag to keep them warm at night.
  • Travel to Tanzania. You will take just 2 days to travel to and from Tanzania. You will fly directly from Heathrow to Kilimanjaro International via Amsterdam with KLM (or choose a regional departure). This is the best schedule available from the UK.
  • Advice. You will be able to call our office to speak to someone who has climbed Kilimanjaro recently.
  • Pre-trip training weekend. You will meet your fellow team members and make friends before setting off together to climb Africa’s highest mountain. You’ll learn about altitude sickness, how to recognise it and how it is treated. You will learn about equipment, what works best and how to use it effectively.

Once you arrive in Tanzania it is a 50-minute transfer to the hotel in Moshi. Overnight hotel.
Day 2:Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (9,170ft / 2,800m)
After breakfast at the hotel, you meet our local guides, our cook and camp assistants. It is a three-hour drive to the Londorossi Park Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. You will walk for 3 to 5 hours to reach Mti Mkubwa ('Big Tree') camp, located in the forest.
Day 3:Mti Mkubwa to Shira One Camp (11,480ft / 3,500m)
You climb through the rainforest towards the giant moorland zone and up to the Shira Crater at 3,305m to reach Shira One Camp.
Day 4:Shira One Camp to Shira Two Camp (12,470 ft / 3,800m) via the Cathedral
You hike east across the Shira Plateau, making a detour towards the plateau's southern lip to ascend Shira Cathedral (12,470ft / 3,880 m) before reaching Shira Two Camp.
Day 5:Shira Two Camp to Baranco Camp (12,675 ft / 3,900 m)
Today is a 7-hour hike in superb country. You pass the Lava Tower first (altitude, 4640m), then traverse the southwestern flank of Kibo and slowly descend past giant groundsel and lobelia to Baranco, our most spectacular campsite, at the foot of Kibo Peak.
Day 6:Baranco Camp to Karanga Camp (13,300ft / 4,050m)
You first challenge today is to overcome the Baranco Wall, which is 600 ft high and takes you to an altitude of 4,244m. From the top, the receding Heim Glacier on Kilimanjaro's south face is clearly visible. Your route continues eastwards underneath the Decken and Rebman Glaciers to Karanga Camp.
Day 7:Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (15,090ft / 4,650m)
From Karanga Camp a 3-hour steady walk takes you to Barafu Camp (4,650m), from where you will make your summit attempt in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Day 8:Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft / 5,896m) to Millennium Camp
You start climbing in the dark well before dawn, on the steepest and most demanding part of the mountain. You'll aim to reach Stella Point on the Crater Rim by sunrise after about 6 hours. From Stella Point, it takes another hour to reach Uhuru - the highest point on the crater rim and the true summit of Africa. You descend to Millennium Camp (3,820m). This is by far the toughest day of the trek and normally takes between 12 and 15 hours.
Day 9:Descend to Mweka Gate. Drive to Moshi.

Early morning game drive followed by breakfast. Half-day game drive then return to Moshi, dinner and overnight at hotel.
Day 13 - 14:Fly home

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is Adventure Travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and the health of participants can all contribute to changes. The Trek Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!
