Rock Climbing and Scrambling photos
Written by Tom Briggs, June 2014
Jagged Globe's Marketing Director, Tom Briggs, joined Course Director, Sam Leary for a couple of days in Snowdonia. Together with photographer, Ben Winston, the aim was to get some new pictures to promote our Rock Climbing and Scrambling courses. They were joined by Ailsa and Alan. Thanks to them and to Sherpa Adventure Gear, who supplied some of the bright clothing. The photos were all taken at venues and on routes that get climbed frequently on the courses. Look out for our re-vamped programme on-line soon!
On Wednesday morning we ventured to Little Tryfan in the Ogwen Valley. This is a great venue for the Rock Introduction course. Despite the forecast for rain, we managed to stay dry. Sam led a line up the middle:
Then Tom and Ailsa climbed the classic 'Diff', Little Tryfan Arete. This can be done in one pitch with a 60m rope. We then headed to the RAC boulders en route to Tremadog. We frequently do some bouldering on our Rock Introduction courses, where course participants can learn how to translate indoor skills to real rock. The Upper Tier at Tremadog has superb rock and views. Tremadog is a popular venue as it's in a rain shadow and is often dry when the mountains are wet. Here Sam leads Quatre Fois Direct, a tricky 'VS' on perfect rough rock, which we often climb on the Classic Rock weekend. On Thursday morning we headed back to Ogwen to get some scrambling pictures. Snowdonia has the best scrambling routes in the UK, no question. Scrambling is the perfect preparation for Alpine climbing. Here, Tom Briggs takes coils - he and Sam will 'move together' using the rope to protect themselves. As the rain continued to hold off and the skies brightened, we drove round to the Llanberis Pass. This is the beauty of climbing in Snowdonia; with so many different venues close by, you can climbed on two or three different rock types each day. Crackstone Rib is an airy grade 'Severe' on Careg Wasted. Tom ran the first two pitches together, which includes some delicate moves around an arte. Alan then leads Sam up the first pitch behind Tom and photographer, Ben. Alan Leary leading the second pitch of Crackstone Rib: Thanks to Sherpa Adventure Gear - Tom was particularly impressed with their base layers, stretchy trousers (perfect for rock climbing) and softshell jacket.
