Mera Peak - 9 October to 3 November 2003

Written by Leader, November 2003

An enjoyable, but alas ultimately summit-free expedition. After walking in the long way and acclimatising well, at the crucial moment of our move up to base camp the heavens opened, dumping dangerous quantities of snow on the mountain. A fruitless wait at the Mera La for conditions to improve was followed by a difficult and demanding return to the valley. We returned to Lukla the quick way, over the Zatrwa La, which gave the opportunity for some of the team to visit Namche Bazaar and the Khumbu valley, with superb views of Everest. When then flew back to Kathmandu to catch the sights before heading home.
